He was predeceased by: his parents, Laila and Harry; and his brother Jack Haapala. He is survived by: his wife Carol Haapala (Hawkins); his children, Shaun Haapala (Christine) and Cindy Snowdon; his stepchildren, Angela Sharma (Kole) and Lesley Tuck (Howard Jannack); his grandchildren, Kayla, Drew, Vaughn, Victoria, Ethan, Ella, Trista and Tanya; and his extended family, Roy, Maria, Kathy, Lisa and Brenda.
