He was predeceased by : his parents, William Merkley and Sarah Merkley; his wife Marian; his son Steven; and his siblings, Gord, Ross, Wesley, Lloyd, Shirley and Harvey.

He is survived by : his children, Richard Merkley (Catherine), Susan Toye (Bill) and Nancy Maille (Mario); and his sister Gayle. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
