He was predeceased by : his child Joey; his grandchild Laurie; his great grandchild Theodore; his siblings, Fien, Sjaan, Nies, Jan and Wim; his siblings-in-law, Kees, Sjef, Drik, Jan and Johanna; and his parents, Peter Riel and Clasina Van Riel.

He is survived by : his wife Helen (DeGroot); his children, Pete Van Riel (Dorothy), Cindy Melton (Chuck), Simon Van Riel (Frances), Mary Elliott (Kevin), Josy Royackers (Gil) and JoAnn Vander Viloet (Frank); his grandchildren, Paula, Brian, Kristy, David, Katie, Dayna, Nikki, Stacey, Jaime, Cindy, Joel, Mike, Leanne, Brad, Eric, Joey, Johnny, Jennifer and Kevin; his sisters, Jo and Riet; and his sisters-in-law, Riet, Annie, Leny and Mary. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

As an expression of sympathy, donations made to the Forest Food Bank would be appreciated by the family.
