He was predeceased by: his parents, William Johnston and Nelly Johnston (Symes); his wife Viola Johnston (Spencer); his son Richard; and his sister Olive (William Shearer).

He is survived by: his sons, Robert (Janet), Brian (Marilyn) and Jim; his daughter-in-law Rose Johnston; his grandchildren, Beverly, Patricia, Jennifer, Richard, Ryan, Sarah, Erin, Emily, Michelle and Christopher; and his great grandchildren, Ethan, Peyton, Madelaine and Jacob.
