She was predeceased by : her husband John David Smith; and her son David William Smith. She is survived by : her children, Kim Gripper (Bob) of Caledonia and Scott (May) of Calgary; her grandchildren, Robbie (Dalya) and Jordan; her great grandchild Maria of Caledonia; and her sister Ruth Payne of Hamilton.

“Dearest Kim and Bob, Scott and May and your families; What sad news to hear about your mom's passing. I didn't know she and mom shared the same middle name "Minnie" until today. Esther was a lifelong sister/friend to our mom, and though they didn't see each other that often, I know they stayed close by phone. These are hard days, and saying goodbye doesn't stop hurting.
