He was predeceased by: his sibling Stana Ilic; and his parents, Stjepan Mitar and Manda Mitar. He is survived by: his spouse Ruza; his siblings, Mila Sego (Jure), Marinko (Mary), Ante (Danica), Domin (Ljilja), Andja Crnogorac (Vinko), Iva Mitar (late Mate) and Ana Bosnjak (late Jerko); his cousin Iva Ilicic (Josip); and his nieces and nephews, Vesna, Maryann, Michael, Katarina, Kreso, Ivica, Tomislav, Sanja, Julijana and Ana Maria.
