He was predeceased by: his wife Greeta (Watkins); his parents, Fred Whalen and Gladys Whalen (Steele); his sibling Rendal Whalen (Dorothy); and his sister-in-law Norma Crayden.

He is survived by: his brother Fred Whalen (Margaret); his sister-in-law Dianne Mills (Ivan); his children, Jamie, Janice McClennan (Mark) and Fred; his granddaughters, Sarah Czerniawski (John) and Samantha Blackbourn (Bryan); his great grandchildren, Faye, Alice Czerniawski, Hazel and Edison Blackbourn; and his stepgreat-grandson Landon Blackbourn.
