He was loved and cherished by many people including: his wife Lori Brien; his son Todd Brien; his daughter-in-law Jill (Lising); and his grandchildren, Madeline and Benjamin.

Because of the grace and charity of a donor family, he became a double lung transplant recipient. Forever grateful for this gift, he educated others, advocated for organ and tissue donation, and was a former board member on the Trillium Gift of Life Network.
