He was predeceased by: his parents, Alfons Schmidt and Gertrud Schmidt (Priebisch); and his siblings, Marianne Staebner, Werner Schmidt and Hannelore Haeberle.

He is survived by: his wife Wally; his children, Jeffrey Schmidt and Emily Cosburn (Drew); his grandchildren, Kieran, Zander, Vaughn Schmidt, Maisie and Fritz Cosburn; and his sibling Dietmar (Gila) of Germany.
