He was predeceased by: his parents, William Mertens and Elfriede Mertens. He is survived by: his wife Barbara; his daughters, Tracey Engel (Marc), Lisa Mertens and Sandy Mertens; his grandchildren, Meghan Mertens Kelsey (Owen), Michael Mertens, Emily Mertens, Rachel Engel and Riley Engel (Logan); his great grandchildren, Evie Engel, Nathaniel Blake, Kayden Blake and Kamari Blake; and his sister Helga Bartels (George).
