He is survived by: his wife Ruth Gilbert; his children, Mandy Jean Ramirez (Jesse) and Peter Jay Gilbert (Farida); his grandsons, Zachary Ramirez, Ethan Gilbert and Gavin Gilbert; his siblings, Harry Gilbert (Awn) of England and Eva Smart of Australia; and his nieces and nephews, Holly Gilbert, Judith Smart, Jonathan Smart and Jason Smart.

“Frances and I were shocked at news of Will's death. We wish to extend our sympathies to Ruth, Mandy and Peter, and also to other loved ones, With our older ages now, we were not interacting quite as much as earlier unfortunately. I remember when Will arrived in our Pure Math department at UW. Elderly Oxford prof Ioan James, a close connection, also died recently. The fun party of '44 at your cottage near (actual place) Dorking reminded me of Peter's tiny but entertaining invitation joke.”
