He was predeceased by: his spouse Kathleen Johnson; and his brother Bill Johnson. He is survived by: his children, Julia Stainton, Stephen Stainton and Andrew Johnson; his grandchildren, James, Heather, David, Benjamin, Joshua Stainton, Simon and Jack Johnson; his siblings, Merv Johnson (Jean), Betty Boronow (Walter), Ellen McIntosh-Green, Mary Lester and Lily Quanz (Ken); and his daughter-in-law Jane. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
