He was predeceased by: his parents, Robertus Alers and Johanna Alers; his nephew Willy Merks; his mother-in-law Evelyn Bennett; and his brother-in-law Brian Bennett.

He is survived by: his spouse Joanne; his stepchildren, Mike (Shellie), Andy (Alaina) and Jennifer; his grandchildren, Justin, Brandan, Kristen, Spencer, Brady, Gavin, Kelly and Elliott; his great grandchild Kylie; his siblings, Robert (Mary) and Marianne (Bill); and his siblings-in-law, Richard (Mona), Gail (Keith), Carol (Pete) and Barb. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
