He was predeceased by: his parents, Nehemia Smits and Catharina Smits. He is survived by: his significant other Jenny Qin; his close friends, Jan DeVries and Len Roth; his sisters, Jannetje VanOeveren (Bram) and Neeltje Smits (late Huib); his sister-in-law Evertje Smits; his siblings, Abraham Smits (Cornelia), Jacob Smits and Willemina Andriesse (Pieter); and his brother-in-law David Potappel. He is also survived by many nephews, nieces.
