Derek passed away after his mother Johanna Blaak (nee Post). He is survived by his father Andy Blaak and ; his wife Katherine (Huelma); his children, Kaydee and Karsten; his sisters, , Marita (Mike), Linda (Jac), June (Mike) and Ruth (Jon); and his siblings-in-law, Ricaredo (Sol), James William Hyslop, Rosalinda, Marianita Galilee (Gregorio) and Rhoda (Renshen).
