He was predeceased by: his wife Ingeborg. He is survived by: his children, Liz Phillips, Susan Lawrence, Vic Ewstratin (Wendy) and Pauline "Paula" Shaw (David); his grandchildren, Tony, Jenn, Kim, Staci, Matthew, Tori, Tyson and Keagan; his great grandchild Wyatt; and his sibling's children, Dirk (Sandra) and Uwe Pfersdorf.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made out to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Alzheimer's Society of Durham.
