“I am sorry not to be able to attend the visitation and funeral for this great man who has been so important to me. I have enjoyed seeing him from time to time in the last few years. Early this year he sent me a card looking back on his long life and noting that he has had his share of disappointments. I was in Berlin in October and took the opportunity to reply to him as I thought most suitable, with a picture postcard of Checkpoint Charlie. I said yes, disappointments, we all have them, but I told him I thought in terms of the great things he did: doing his part to defeat fascism as a young man, then spending his next 40 years fighting communism. Yes he was a hero to me. 'Blessed indeed that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!'”
