He was predeceased by: his parents, Johannes (Minna Reichert) and Friedhold; his spouse Liesa; his siblings, Gerhard, Bernd and Nelli; and his grandson Andreas.

He is survived by: his siblings, Rosi (Juergen) and Erika; his children, Renate (Dieter), Gerhard (Gayle), Barbara (George) and Marion (Greg); his grandchildren, Sonja, Monika, Brandon, Laura, Cheryl, Tanya, Tobias, Sarah, Hannah and Leah-Joy; and his great grandchildren, Fletcher, Lucy, Amelia, Asher and Callie.
