Doug Beattie Obituary
Passed away peacefully on November 28, 2025, surrounded by his loving family at the Marotta Family Hospital. A proud St. Catharines native, Doug grew up on Chaplin Ave. in a four-bedroom home with his parents and 10 brothers and sisters. It's where he met his wife, Connie (née Nugent), with whom he shared 55 wonderful years and raised their two sons, Ross and Lawrence, and countless pets. Doug worked hard throughout his life to support his family, starting at Transit Mix and Lightning Fastener before becoming a fixture at General Motors for 31 years where, as he was proud to share, he missed only six days.
A handyman at heart, whether he was planting or replanting trees, digging or filling in ponds, Doug had a tool for everything and a lending hand for anyone. He was known by all who met him as a fair, kind, and decent human who believed everyone among us to be equal. He was endeared by a select crew of his sons' generation because he was often silent in thought, yet made every word count when he chose to speak. On any given day, Doug could be found walking the neighborhood with his latest Shih Tzu, Lily, while sneaking treats to four-legged friends around the block. His side porch was his sanctuary: a quiet radio always playing, a warm heater in the winter, and a cool cross breeze in the summer. It was there he often shared his quiet warmth, a cold beer, and witty perspectives with the people who loved him most.
Doug is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Connie, his sons, Ross (Katie Modolo) and Lawrence (Jess Dodd), and his cherished grandchildren, Alice, Violet, Olivia, Charlie, and Oscar. He is also survived by his siblings Jack (Sandy) Beattie, Don Beattie, Howie (Val) Beattie, and Mary (Jim) Miller, along with many nieces and nephews. Doug was predeceased by his parents, Elmer and Violet Beattie; and his brothers, Dick and Roger; and sisters, Joan, Diane, Carol, and Nancy.
Connie, Ross, Lawrence and their family will host a celebration of life for Doug in the weeks ahead. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations, financial or blood, to Canadian Blood Services in Doug's name to honor his 192 lifetime blood donations. Arrangements entrusted to GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton Street, St. Catharines.
The family has chosen to send donations to CANADIAN BLOOD SERVICES FOUNDATION/FONDATION DE LA SOCIÉTÉ CANADIENNE DU SANG.
