He was predeceased by: his parents, Jack Thompson and Anne Thompson (Faulhafer); his brothers, Fred and Harold; his parents-in-law, Catherine and Alfred Ellis; and his sister-in-law Jean Piper.

He is survived by: his wife Sally Thompson (Ellis); his children, Marni Thompson (Alvin Bolkovic) and Heather Thompson (Michael Gingras); and his sister-in-law Joyce McGraw. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews.
