“Satch was a kind and caring man despite a little gruff exterior. Once he got to know you he would do anything for you. He worked behind the LU equipment counter for years and I was the Athletic Therapist in the clinic across from it. Every Monday he would come to the clinic door during the hockey season and we would chew the fat about how the LU hockey team had done that week end. He would lean back against the door jamb and rub side to side scratching his back like a great old grizzly bear. He was the trainer for the hockey team for many years and with his wartime knowledge when he was a medic, he was invaluable to the team. Tough as nails, I remember how he resolutely refused to wear a jacket when standing behind the bench during one game at the Garson arena. He stood in a golf shirt while there was 6” of ice frozen to the wall directly behind him and I was huddled up in a full winter jacket, hats and mitts. He was the most talented artist making signs all around Sudbury with his signature bear paw in the corner. He painted the most beautiful and masterful LU voyageur logo...big ones and little ones...pride of place in the centre of the LU gymnasium floor, on the gym wall, on my clinic door, athletic department letterhead, t-shirts, you name it. His talents and wisecracks will be sorely missed.”
