Douglas Atkinson Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas (Doug) Atkinson (68), on March 21 with his family by his side.
He is survived by his wife Margo Butler, children Kary, Cameron, and Alice Butler (Adam Johnston), and grandchildren Merek, Maksym, Olivia, and Andrew.
Predeceased by his father, Claude Atkinson, Doug remained a devoted and loving son to his mother, Mona Atkinson. He is remembered by his beloved sister Shirley Hovey, and brother Brian Atkinson and will be greatly missed by niece Loralie (Brad), nephew Bruce (Linda), the Butlers, Tinkesses, and his many friends.
Doug spent his career as a registered nurse at the Regional Treatment Centre at KP and later hosted tours there in his retirement. He made many friends throughout his career and was known for his compassion and care for his patients.
A champion napper, avid reader, and sports fan, Doug was quick with a warm smile and a joke and even during his illness, he maintained his warmth and humor. Doug was a good friend to many and could always be relied on to lend a hand to support others. He had the gift for gab and loved to tell and retell stories.
Doug was an avid golfer, a passion he inherited from his father and was proud to pass on to his daughter Kary, despite her natural talents. He was an amateur magician and loved learning, practicing, and performing. Particularly adept at sleight of hand, he was never far from a deck of cards.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at KGH for the excellent care he received throughout his illness and the support offered to the family as well as the friends who supported Doug and family through his illness.
A service will be held at The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 496 in Sydenham on Saturday April 4th, from 2 to 2:30pm followed by a Celebration of Life from 2:30 to 5:30. In lieu of flowers the family asks that a donation be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
