Ian Hamilton wrote a sympathy message

“John was an excellent colleague and I was always glad to talk to him. John was an expert on quantum chemical calculations and he was happy to share his knowledge- I specifically recall consulting him regarding some challenging calculations on the oxonolysis of ethene and propene. On John’s recommendation, I hired Wai-To Chan (as a postdoctoral fellow) who was, for several years, a very important member of my research group at Wilfrid Laurier University. Unfortunately, I lost touch with John when he retired from the University of Guelph- I had no idea that he was living in Toronto.”

“We were very sad indeed to hear about John's passing. I knew him well when we were both at Guelph. He was a deeply ethical person and a terrific, hard-working department chair (among other academic roles). I will always remember his kindness to my son when a promised high school co-op job didn't pan out. John hired my son and gave him interesting, meaningful work to do, when nobody else seemed willing to help. Supervising that high school kid added to John's workload but gave my son a really memorable work experience and an outstanding role model in academic rigour and compassion. Godspeed, John.
