He is survived by: his wife Laura Kennedy-Rankin; his children, Virginia (Mark Caswell), Diana (Gordon Kerr), Simon (Nives Rankin) and Andrew (Eva Rankin); his stepchildren, Kristie Kennedy, Andrew Kennedy (Duska), Kara Kennedy (Jeff), Sally Tindal (Angel), Michael Tindal (Ann) and Jeremy Tindal; his grandchildren, Juliet, Miles, Katherine, Matthew, Amanda, Olivia, Sebastian, Christopher, Ambrose, Aiden, Elise and Alexa; and his stepgrandchildren, Hudson, Anderson, Everett, Chloe, Carson, Ayla, Bronte and Alexis.

In lieu of flowers, John requested that donations be made to: The Salvation Army or, In support of Dr. Heather Ross and the UHN's Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at UHN Foundation.
