John Verner Mathers Obituary
With solemn hearts, we announce the passing of John Verner Mathers (Toronto, Ontario), whose presence will be deeply missed, having departed on November 9, 2025 at the age of 95. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.
He was predeceased by: his brother Andrew; and his sisters-in-law, Suzanne, Drew, Mary and Jane Mathers.
He is survived by: his wife Joan; his children, Janet (Robert Laing), Eric (Pennie), Ian (Heidi) and Scott; his grandchildren, Chris, Elizabeth (Peter Doran), Alexander, Patrick, Colin and Pamela (Taylor Milliken); his great grandchildren, Sophia, Blythe, Faye, Clara Doran and Daisy Mathers; and his stepsiblings, John, Charles Lennox and Susan Garrard.
He was a long-time member of Toronto Golf Club and the Granite Club where he remained active in swimming and curling right up until Covid.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Daily Bread or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. As John generously donated blood to the Red Cross over 100 times, a donation in his honour is encouraged.
