He was predeceased by: his wife Phyllis; his parents, Justice R. Reginald Bell and Helena Bell (Rogers); and his sister Carolyn. He is survived by: his children, Geoffrey (Jane) of Australia, David (Barbra) and Susan Edwards (Les) of New Zealand; and his grandchildren, Charles, Julia, Joanna of Australia, Jackson, Harrison, Sophie, Emma and Sarah of New Zealand.
