He was loved and cherished by many people including: his wife Katherine Spence (Barycky); his children, Sandra (Andy), Scott, Laurie (John), Jadie (Cathy) and Sally (Eric); his grandchildren, Krystle, Tyler, Heather, Johanna Dawn (Alexandra), Jackie, Gordon, Shianna, James, Luke, Kali and Abi; his great grandchildren, Jacob, Patrick and Jaxson; and his parents, Margaret Fletcher (Peggy) and Alexander Spence.
Sandy received The Governor General's Caring Canadian Award in 2002 in recognition of his outstanding and selfless contribution to his community and to Canada for over 40 years of coaching young people.
