He was predeceased by: his sister Rita Herlein; his parents, John Herlein and Mary Herlein; his brothers-in-law, George Able and Albert Kruesel; and his son-in-law Kenneth Desjarlais.

He is survived by: his wife Audrey Herlein; his children, Carrie Desjarlais (Ivan), Margaret Herlein (Raymond), James Herlein (Mai), Michael Herlein (Shadreen) and Sharon Ward (Brian); and his siblings, Lorraine Kruesel, Barbara Anderson (Aaron), MaryAnn Nimmo (Robert) and Donald Herlein (Wanda). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
