He was predeceased by: his parents, Frederick Thiel and Cecilia Thiel; his wife Mary; his daughter Shelly; his brothers, Jim Thiel and Ray Thiel; and his parents-in-law, John and Elizabeth Neuberger.

He is survived by: his grandson Jesse Thiel (Sam); his son Darwin (family: Kelli, Tanner, Dakota, Shelly-Lynn, Paris, Avah-Rae); his great grandchildren, Rylynn, Shyloh and Mackinnon; his siblings, Allen Thiel (Monica), Jean Nikolejsin (John) and Doreen Thiel; and his sisters-in-law, Vivian Thiel and Norma Thiel. He is also survived by brother and sisters-in-law; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
