She was predeceased by: her parents, Rose Westman and Hedwin Westman; her former husband Bill Kirshner; and her siblings, Norman Westman and Kay Taylor.

She is survived by: her children, Norman and Kathleen; her sister Kathleen (Kay); her husband Wilhelm Kirschner (Bill); and her children, Helen Harrison (Floyd), Lois Street (Gary), Mary Paddington (Cliff), Heather Wrightson (John) and Guy Kirshner (Joanne). She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and 14 great great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces & nephews.

When her children were in grade school, Joan donated her time and expertise to teach local classes in bead work and shell picture making.
