He was predeceased by: his parents, Frederick Zaplitny and Elizabeth Zaplitny; his brother Rick Zaplitny; and his brother-in-law Gerry White (Susan Zaplitny). He is survived by: his wife Michelle (Kobitz); his daughters, Jennifer (Andrew) and Karen (Phillip); his stepchildren, Teagan (Chance) and Adam; his grandchildren, Anderson, Alec, Jasper, Everett, Caitlyn and Scarlett; his sister Gail White; his sister-in-law Bev Zaplitny; his brother John (Linda); and his brother-in-law Mark Kobitz.
He was awarded the Canada 125 medal at Government House in 1992, given to "citizens who had made significant contributions to their community and to Canada," and served as the President of the Regina Chamber of Commerce while still at Rawlco Radio.
