He was predeceased by: his significant other Alice Ruth Gates; his parents, Robert Sr. Gates and Vonnie Gates; his siblings, Charles Gates, Floyd Gates, Glennard "Buddy" Gates and Ruth Augustine Gates; and his son Martin Russell Lassiter (Wayne Burkette).
He is survived by: his daughters, Linda Lassiter-Hamilton and Rebel Gates Howard of McDavid, FL; his siblings, Bobby Ray Gates of Freemanville, AL, Bonnie Williams of Atmore, AL and Wilerneese Cole of Atmore, AL; and his grandchildren, Russell, Tosha, Tabitha, Lauren, Hannah, Haden and Martina. He is also survived by fourteen great grandchildren.
