He was predeceased by: his wife Minnie Catheren Cook Shannon; his son Samuel Wayne Shannon; his parents, John Roy and Ruby Harper Shannon Sr.; and his sisters, Mary Ann McWaters (Wayne) and Joyce Mitchell (Charles).

He is survived by: his brother Dr. Harper Shannon (Elsie); his sons, J. Harold Shannon (Gloria), Ralph E. Shannon (Janet) and Roy H. Shannon (Mary); and his grandchildren, Troy McLauren Shannon, Eric Todd Shannon, Kellie Shannon Day (Jamie), Susan Shannon Dove, James Patrick Shannon (Jenny) and Amy Catheren Cook (Matthew). He is also survived by four great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and their children.
