He was predeceased by: his wife Joycelyn Lower Hayes; his son Brian Wayne Hayes; his parents, Edward Frank Hayes and Marie E. Floyd; and his siblings, Ruth E. Huey and Edward Hayes.

He is survived by: his children, Robert Thomas Hayes, Jr. (Wendy), Roberta Hayes Berry (Paul) and Patricia Hayes Krout (Todd); and his grandchildren, Rachel Ramos, Joy Krout, Alex Hayes, Andrew Hayes, Josh Krout, Drew Hayes and Curt Hayes. He is also survived by numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
