He was predeceased by : his parents, James M. Copeland, Sr. and Willie Mae Ferguson Copeland; and his siblings, Joy Copeland, Mae Alexander, Lena Cox and Buddy Copeland.

He is survived by : his wife Gloria Lowery Copeland; his children, Lori Holsonback (Tommy), John Snead (Tammy), Mark Snead (Virginia), Denise Westmoreland (Jay) and Melanie West (Vaughn); and his sister Sara Francis Longshore (Don).
