He was predeceased by: his parents, Alex Thornton and Della Thornton; his former wife Polly Thornton; and his sister Rose Dearmon. He is survived by: his wife Doris L. Thornton of Fruitdale, AL; his son Howard Thornton, Jr. (Sylvia) of Buckatunna, MS; his stepsons, Charles Garland (Sally) of Yellow Pine, AL and Mark Garland (Kelly) of Fruitdale, AL; his daughter Charlotte Young (Terry) of State Line, MS; his stepdaughters, Joan Deese (George) of Yellow Pine, AL and Nina Brown (Kevin) of Fruitdale, AL; and his siblings, Rev. Frank Thornton (Willie) of Fruitdale, AL, Bruce Thornton (Bernice) of State Line, MS, Glen Thornton (Pam) of State Line, MS, Lillian Webb of Calvert, AL, Marie Hall (Roger) of State Line, MS, Gladys Delk (Tommy) of State Line, MS, Brenda Crager (Larry) of State Line, MS and Phyllis Thornton of Fruitdale, AL. He is also survived by five grandchildren; 12 step grandchildren; a host of great grandchildren.
