He was predeceased by: his parents, Ella Mae Cornutt Simmons and Hugh Dorsey Simmons; and his sister Peggy Simmons Young (Ray). He is survived by: his wife Patricia Howington Simmons; his sons, Hugh Judson Simmons (Rebecca) and Ben Hamilton Simmons (Amy); his grandsons, Jack and Henry Simmons; his sister-in-law Chessie Howington Lavallier (Keith); and his nephews, Jimmy, Mark Young, Benjamin and Jonathan Lavallier.

In lieu of flowers, friends and family may donate in Hugh's memory to the MeadowBrook Baptist Church building fund.
