He was predeceased by: his parents, Margie B. McMahan and Walter C. Burns, Sr.; his sister Hatsey B. Campbell; and his stepdaughter Kandice J. Gargus. He is survived by: his wife Beverly Kay A. Burns; and his children, Jeremy Burns (Leslie), Jeffery Burns (Marissa) and Kimberly Dilley (Cameron).

The family has requested in lieu of flowers, Memorials be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.
