He was predeceased by: his son Jamey Hightower; his grandson Travis Hightower; and his parents, T. M. Hightower and Willeene Hightower. He is survived by: his wife Shirley G. Hightower; his son Jody Hightower (Diona) of Hoover; his grandchildren, Trevor Hightower (Morgan) of Vestavia and Alexa Hightower of Hoover; his sister Linda Flippo (Billy) of Gardendale; his nieces, Cynthia Stewart (Tim) and Debbie Hurst (Lynn); his brother-in-law Rodger Guthrie; his nephew Jason Guthrie (Sandy); his niece Lisa Guthrie; and his stepfather-in-law James Shaw of Gardendale.
