He was predeceased by: his wife Katie Sue Smith; his son Randy Smith; his parents, James A. and Marie Smith, Sr.; and his siblings, Albert Lee Smith (Carolyn) and Alma Jean Holland.

He is survived by: his children, Dewayne Smith, Timothy Smith, Kenneth Wayne Hays and Deborah Hays Yarborough; his granddaughter Randi Smith; his brothers, J. G. Kramer (Elizabeth) and Robert C. Smith (Pam); his sister-in-law Mildred Parrish; and his nephew Ronnie Parrish.
