He was predeceased by: his parents, James Walter Lawrence and Mary Lou Cryer Lawrence; his former wives, Martha Lee Lawrence and Lillian Knight Lawrence; and his son James Barry Lawrence.

He is survived by: his children, Jay Lawrence (Martha), Ronnie Knight, Ricky Knight, Randy Knight and Barbara Lawrence Gray (Thomas); and his grandchildren, Drew Bartlett and Tyler Bartlett.
