She was predeceased by : her parents, Arnold Avans and Julia Reeves Avans; her husband Calvin Higdon; and her siblings, R. C. "Sam" Avans, Geraldine Palmer, Onless Avans, Cordelia Melton and Fred Avans.

She is survived by : her children, Calvin Gerald Higdon (Vickie) and Cecilia Scott (Bill); her sister Alladine Pruitt; and her grandchildren, Amanda Jill Goins (Gabriel), Nicholas Mitchell Higdon (Beth), Angela Misti Hoover (Darrell) and Adam Christopher Scott (Alisha). She is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
