It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of George Elbert Newby of Huntsville, Alabama, who passed away on July 11, 2025, at the age of 93, leaving to mourn family and friends. He was predeceased by: his wife Lorene League Newby; his parents, John Newby and Lillie Newby; his children, Wayne Newby (Judy) and Wanda Bragg; and his sister Bettie Fisher (Maurice).
He is survived by: his son Jon Newby (Lynn); his grandson Matthew Newby; his great grandchild Makinley Newby; and his brother Doyle Newby.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 16th 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Berryhill Funeral Home (2305 Memorial Pkwy NW, Huntsville, AL 35810). A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 17th 2025 at 10:00 AM.
George received numerous national awards for this, including the Freedom Foundation Award, Gold Good Citizenship Award, Service to Mankind Award, and the National George Washington Honor Medal for Excellence in Education.
