He was predeceased by: his parents, Rosemary Gatherer (Kalfas) and James Willard Gatherer, Jr.. He is survived by: his wife Margaret Gatherer (Purdy); his children, James W. Gatherer, IV and Amy Crutcher (Nick); his sisters, Gail Grimes (Dickson), Lisa Gatherer and Madi Gatherer (Chris Stallings); and his brother-in-law Phillip Purdy (Lynn). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In remembrance of Jim, the family suggests donations to the Land Trust of North Alabama or the American Heart Association.
