She was predeceased by : her husband Dr. Joseph Clyde Dowdle; her parents, Johnny Gates and Hattie Cook Gates; her brother Dr. John Robert Gates; her son-in-law William Sterling May; her siblings-in-law, William Thomas Dowdle Jr. and Lois Mertens Dowdle; and her niece Curry Jo Dowdle.
She is survived by : her daughters, Jan Dowdle Thornton (Mark), Jeanne Dowdle Rizzardi (Donald) and Joanna Dowdle May-Rouse (Matthew); her grandchildren, John Wildsmith Thornton, Matthew Roderick Thornton, Lexie Gates Rasco, Cate Joseph Rasco, Hughston Elizabeth May, Annabelle Gates May, Joshua William May and Joseph Dowdle May; her son-in-law Mark Alexander Rasco; her nephew William Thomas Dowdle, III; and her niece Ginny Gates Skelton.
