He was predeceased by: his parents, Danna Boatner Avery and Collier King Avery; and his siblings, Marvin Avery, Troy Avery, Noah Avery, Paul Avery, Eldridge Avery, Leonard Avery, Herbert Avery, Alma Avery Price Kizziah, Mary Ruth Avery and Trevena Avery Ponds.

He is survived by: his wife Wretha Crawford Avery of Huntsville; his daughters, Aleta Avery Stender (Billy) and Anna Avery (Mark McClure); his sister Velma Avery Chaney of Texarkana; and his grandchildren, Dana Stender of Huntsville, Kasey Stender of Huntsville, Erin Stender of Huntsville and Lucas Avery McClure of Huntsville.

In lieu of flowers, Mr. Avery requests that donations be made to U.S. Marines Toys for Tots Foundation.
