He was predeceased by: his brother William Oakes; and his parents, John Oakes Jr. and Catherine Ivy. He is survived by: his wife Minnie Oakes; his children, Jacin Oakes, Terry Oakes (Stephanie), Jerry Oakes and David Oakes (Ashley); and his siblings, John David (Janie), Ricky Oakes (Shelia), Patricia Kimbrough (Donnie), Luther Oakes and Lewis Oakes. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren.
