He was predeceased by: his wife Martha Alice; his parents, John Wheat and Myrtle Wheat; and his brother John Russell Wheat. He is survived by: his children, Janice Henderson (Herb), Timothy (Judy) and Amy Vandergrift (Eddie); his brothers, Carroll Gene and Gary (Brenda); his sisters-in-law, Mary McWilliams and Barbara Pendleton; his grandchildren, Aaron, Michelle, Phoebe, Ray, Rachel, James and Jessica; and his great grandchildren, Brooke, Brecken, Malei, Braedyn, Gemma, Tre', Lily, Elizabeth and Alice. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
