He was predeceased by: his parents, Merl Thornton and Clarabelle Northey; his sister Genevieve Stetor; and his grandson Leo Thornton. He is survived by: his sons, Paul Thornton (Adina) and David Thornton (Catherine); and his sister Lois Welsh. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
