He was predeceased by: his parents, Oliver Shay and Inez Shay; his siblings, Patricia Shay Robertson and James Elwin Shay; and his stepdaughter Amanda Dawson Lewis.
He is survived by: his wife Vicki Wheeler Shay; his daughters, Emily Shay and April Shay of Birmingham; his sister Denise Shay (Curtis) of Birmingham; his stepchildren, Jaime Vang (Tommy) of Wausau and Jeremiah Dawson of Dayton; his grandchildren, Jacob Thomas Vang of Wausau, Kaleb Vang of Wausau, Cameron Noah Vang of Wausau, Ethan Kai Vang of Wausau, Benjamin James Lewis of Stephens Point, Atari Mason Lewis of Stephens Point, Daphne Laine Lewis of Stephens Point, Kayla Shay and Katie Shay of Birmingham; his sisters-in-law, Christy Thompson (John) of Blaine, Shelly Garris (Brian) of Stokes, Kelli Roe (Lynn) of Maplesville, Angie Smith of Cullman and Kathy Shay of Remlap; his pets, Tucker, Freddie and Jayda; and also, James and Joanna Wheeler of Maplesville.
